Learning Objectives
Students should be able to:
- Understand why children are a vulnerable population and why special safeguards are needed to protect children as research participants.
- Understand the differences between pre-event and post-event MCM research and the ethical challenges of research with children in each context.
- Describe conditions under which pre-event MCM research with children is ethically permissible.
- Understand the protections afforded to pediatric research participants in the federal regulations, particularly the minimal risk standard.
