In an essay published by the Hastings Center, Bioethics Commission Executive Director Valerie Bonham discusses President Obama’s desire to increase research opportunities, which he expressed during his recent State of the Union Address. In December 2010, just one month prior, the Bioethics Commission explored the potential risks and benefits of synthetic biology in its report New Directions: The Ethics of Synthetic Biology and Emerging Technologies.
